State Water assists with metering standards

NSW licensed water users and meter suppliers/installers are reminded to contact State Water for assistance with the NSW Interim Water Metering Standards before installing new water meters.

The NSW Office of Water introduced interim standards from Friday, 2 October 2009 that apply until the new National Water Meter Standards (NWMS) are introduced.

State Water Metering Project Officer Gordon Lennox said State Water is happy to assist people looking to install a new meter to ensure they comply with the interim standards.

“The interim standards ensure local industry suppliers have a clear direction on the installation of flow meters as part of a pumping installation, and customers are clear on the specifications,” Mr Lennox said.

Under the interim standards, flow meters installed must be suitable for purpose and operate accurately over their lifespan.

“Accurate operation can be significantly impacted by flow turbulence in pipe. This can be alleviated by choosing the correct type of meter and its position in the system,” he said.

“We are happy to assist people with understanding what the correct meter types are and how to install them.”

Until the NWMS are introduced, new flow meters that meet the interim standards can be installed and will not need to be upgraded once the NWMS come into effect.

A grandfathering provision will be applied to meters installed prior to 2 October 2009 giving owners a number of years to ensure their water meter is compliant with the new standards.

“State Water strives to efficiently deliver water and welcomes the introduction of the new standards, as accurate flow meters will lead to more efficient water management and use,” Mr Lennox said.

“Accurate measurement and equitable delivery to all users of this scarce resource is critical.”

Flow meters that do not meet the interim standards and have been installed after 2 October 2009 may not be compliant once the new National Water Meter Standards commence, that means they will also not be eligible for the grandfathering provision.

The interim standards apply to meters that are:

  • In new installations
  • Replaced due to breakdown or
  • Moved to a new site or position in installation
