Joint effort to combat drought in Lachlan
Water authorities and local communities in the Lachlan valley will consolidate efforts to ensure essential drinking water supplies continue to be provided.
With Wyangala Dam falling below 6% and only sporadic winter rain in the valley, a series of information sessions has been held to advise communities on drought management measures that will be implemented.
State Water, the Department of Water and Energy, Lachlan Valley Water and the Lachlan Customer Service Committee held meetings in Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Hillston and Coorong, which attracted a total of 150 local community members.
Under current circumstances it is likely the Lachlan River would be stopped at Lake Cargelligo or Condobolin by September to ensure essential drinking water remains available for communities.
Landholders have been advised to stock up on what river water is currently available before September to meet stock and domestic needs over summer.
Attendees requested more detail information on river operations and responsibilities, according to Executive Officer of Lachlan Valley Water, Mary Ewing.
“It was an extremely worthwhile exercise, firstly to assure the communities that the various water entities are well aware of the situation in the Lachlan as a result of the enduring drought, and to reassure residents that essential water supplies will be protected,” Ms Ewing said.
“Unless there is a dramatic turn around in weather in coming months, the situation in the Lachlan will inevitably bring hardship, especially to landholders, but those who attended the meeting shared our determination to do all we can to most the most of existing water resources.”
